We are the quarry.
RMG Slate
is indigenous to the Fair Haven, VT area.
In the mid 1800s the quarries of the Vermont – New York Slate
Belt were producing Vermont's famed green and purple slates, which
kept out the rain and snow on roofs around the nation. In recent
years there has been resurgence in this industry for upscale
flooring, natural landscaping, roof shingles, and countertops and
sinks. Vermont
slate is exceptionally fine-grained, impervious to water and comes
non-fading colors.
ABOUT SLATE
Slate
is a metamorphic rock, made up of compressed mudstones and shale’s
formed underground some 350 million years ago.
RESILIENT
Abrasion Resistance - 8.4 to 10.6 per ASTM C241
Slates
are classified as fading or unfading according to their color
stability. Woodland Jade Slate™ and Mountain Plum Slate™ are
designated as unfading.
Our unfading slate has and will maintain its original color for many
years.
POROSITY
Water Absorption - .13 of 1% in 48 hours per ASTM C121
The low porosity
and low absorption of RMG’s slate mitigate the deleterious action of
frost on the stone and make it well adapted for all climates. The
two most important structural properties of slate are cleavage and
grain.
Slate’s versatility and non-slip qualities means RMG Slate can be
used almost anywhere.
DURABILITY
Modulus of Rupture - 10,900 psi per ASTM C120
Color
permanence generally provides no indication of the durability of
slate. Rather, time has shown that the Vermont and New York slates
will last about 125 years.
And thanks to its hard wearing surface, slate is particularly
suitable for those areas subject to heavy traffic.
STRENGTH
Compressive Strength - 23,600 psi per ASTM C170
RMG Slate
quarried for countertop is a dense, sound rock and exceedingly tough
and durable. As an example Vermont Slate roofs have been nicknamed
the “hundred year roof”.
Due to the high silica content in Vermont Slate (considered
S-1 on the Marble scale) hardness is one
of
its
definite
characteristics
over other countertop materials.
Slate is not a product of today’s throw away world, but will
be part of a home’s lasting beauty and charm.
